Performing Laboratory: Cole Diagnostics and ARUP Laboratories

Ordering Recommendation: Crystal analysis is only performed on Synovial fluid. All other tests can be performed on Pericardial, Peritoneal/Ascites, Pleural, or Synovial fluid.

Methodology: Microscopic Examination/ Quantitative Enzymatic/ Quantitative Spectrophotometry

Specimen Requirements:

Preferred Container: Sterile Container AND Lav Top (EDTA) AND Anaerobic Transport Medium

Specimen Preparation:  Synovial, pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and any other fluids are obtained by provider. (Only synovial fluid will include a crystal analysis). Portion the fluid between a sterile container, a EDTA lavender tube, AND Anaerobic Transport Medium using the original syringe. Submit to the lab immediately.

Volume Requirements: 6 mL (4 mL)

Stability: Sterile Container for Culture: A: 24 hours; R: Unacceptable; F: Unacceptable; EDTA Lavender Tube: A: 4 hours; R: 24 hours; F: Unacceptable

Parental genotyping: Lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or yellow (ACD Solution A or B).    

Specimen Preparation:  

Cultured amniocytes: Transport two T-25 flasks at 80 percent confluency filled with culture media. Backup cultures must be retained at the client's institution until testing is complete.

Maternal cell contamination specimen: Transport whole blood.

Parental genotyping: Transport whole blood.
